What is up with fairytales?

There are so many fairytale retellings that have either just come out, or are coming out soon (movies and tv, not books. If I did books this blog post would be a mile long). I'm a little bit amazed--and I'm wondering if this is some kind of new media craze. There have always been retellings, but I didn't think there were ever THIS MANY at once (I didn't go farther back than 2010 to find these either, I know there are more from years past). Check it:

(There are also Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and Maleficent which don't have posters yet.)

(Did I forget any? I'm sure I did. Let me know in the comments! P.S. The second picture, the girl in the dress, is for Mirror Mirror. Also WHAT IS UP with all the Snow White? Three of these movies (Maleficent (Kristin is right--she's Sleeping Beauty. The Powers That Be can revoke my Disney movie fan-card now), Snow White and the Huntsman, and Mirror Mirror), are all snow white, and in Once Upon A Time, Snow White is a primary supporting character.)

What do you think? Are these stories so awesome we'll never get tired of them? Or do you kind of wish people would come up with some new fantasy plots already? Or, maybe they are awesome and there's a reason to continue retelling them, but is this TOO MANY at once?

  1. I love fairy tales, so I'm super pleased with most of the recent movies. Alice in Wonderland was amazing, but Red Riding Hood was pretty horrible. I just get upset when the movies/shows aren't done well. So far Grimm is pretty good and I have high hopes for Once Upon a Time. I do find it odd that there are a lot of Snow White adaptations right now, but the only thing really bad about it is that Kirsten Stewart is going to ruin the one she's in because she can't act.

  2. You already know I love fairytales, but wow. I didn't realize there were so many recent retellings. Makes you wonder how these trends get started and why they hit in waves.

  3. I didn't realize this either, although it seems every time I turn around there's a new one.

Um, wait...I'm writing a fairytale story. Good thing? Bad thing? Hmmm

  4. It really is crazy how many fairy tales are being redone right now--seeing them all in one place is almost overwhelming!

And I thought Maleficent was from Sleeping Beauty??

Found your blog through Karen! You did great artwork for her!!

  5. Yeah, there's definitely been a surge in fairy tale retellings lately. This is generally fine by me since I LOVE fairy tale retellings, but not all of them are that great and I fear getting overwhelmed by too many of them at once. The stories themselves though, I think, are timeless and they're sparse enough (being fairy tales) that lots of different things can be done with them while keeping recognizable tropes or motifs.

But yeah, what IS with the Snow White thing? She's like the least interesting of the fairy tale princesses to me. :P (Found you through Tere's blog, btw!)
